Raleigh, N.C. –
On a hypothetical
presidential ballot, Hillary Clinton comes out ahead of Jeb Bush, Chris
Christie, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, Rand Paul, and Paul Ryan, with women and
African-Americans overwhelmingly supporting Clinton in each match-up. The GOP favorites
for presidential nominee were Rand Paul and Chris Christie, each at 17%. Rand
Paul was the top choice for “very liberal” and “very conservative” voters.

“There’s been a decent amount of Kasich 2016 buzz recently,” said Dean
Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. “But he doesn’t have a lot of
support for President in his home state.”

House Speaker John Boehner’s approval rating was 20-59, including 34% of
Republicans disapproving. Support for recognition of gay couples is strong: 69%
of voters support either civil unions or marriage. 64% of 18-45-year-olds
support same-sex marriage.

Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown had a 46-36 approval rating, much higher
than Republican Senator Rob Portman’s 29-39 rating. Kasich’s abortion restrictions
this summer were supported by only 34% of voters, while 40% oppose.

Although the Cleveland Browns have more fans than the Cincinnati Bengals –
36% and 25%, respectively – 43% of people think the Bengals will have a better
season, compared to 32% for the Browns. 43% of men don’t root for either team,
compared to only 34% of women. The Cincinnati Reds were the favorite MLB team.
Basketball player LeBron James had a 32-29 favorability rating, 51-14 among
African-Americans.

68% of respondents are Ohio State University fans. Ulysses S. Grant was the
favorite Ohio-born president with 37% of the votes.

Two-thirds of respondents said they associate “Carolina” with the University
of North Carolina, not the University of South Carolina. Democrats, men, and older voters were more likely to
associate “Carolina” with UNC.

PPP surveyed 551 Ohio
voters, including an oversample of 357 usual Republican primary voters, between
August 16-19, 2013. The margin of error for the overall survey is +/- 4.2%, and
+/- 5.2% for the GOP portion. This poll was not authorized or paid for by any
campaign or political organization. PPP’s surveys are conducted through
automated telephone interviews.
