Raleigh, N.C. – Wisconsin’s
political landscape looks roughly the same as it did seven months ago. Gov.
Scott Walker’s job approval rating is the same: 48-49, and he still leads
match-ups with four potential Democratic challengers by margins of four to
seven points.
Of these possible opponents, Kathleen Vinehout and Mary Burke had the
highest favorability ratings at 19% and 18% respectively. Peter Barca was next with
15%. Barca dropped a bit since his 19% rating in February. More than 60% of
respondents said they weren’t sure about Vinehout, Burke, Barca, and Tom
Nelson.
Walker has his lowest approval among 18-29-year-old voters. Burke is the
favorite Democratic candidate of this age group. These voters choose Walker’s opponent in each match-up, and go 65%
Democratic on the hypothetical ballot. The state as a whole is split on the legislative
ballot: 44% for Democrats and 43% for Republicans.
Only 20% of Wisconsin voters support the controversial law passed by the
legislature this year that would enforce stricter rules for abortions. 47% say
they are opposed, including 58% of Democrats, 36% of Republicans, and 45% of
Independents. 33% overall were not sure. 57% of 18-29-year-old voters opposed
this bill.
45% of voters say the solidarity singers shouldn’t have to get a permit to
protest at the legislature. 41% think they should. Voters broke by party with just
17% of Democrats but 72% of Republicans saying they should have to get a
permit.
“Scott Walker’s position hasn’t changed much over the last six months,” said
Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. “Voters have mixed feelings
about him but the jury’s out on whether the Democratic candidate will be strong
enough to take advantage of that.”
President Barack Obama’s approval rating dropped slightly to 47% approving
and 49% disapproving. His rating was 50-48 in February.
PPP surveyed 1,180 Wisconsin
voters between September 13-16, 2013. The margin of error for the survey is +/-
2.9%. This poll was not authorized or paid for by any campaign or political
organization. PPP’s surveys are conducted through automated telephone
interviews.
