Raleigh, N.C.- PPP’s latest national poll finds
President Obama’s approval ratings narrowly split at 47% positive to 49%
negative. His nemeses, Congressional Republicans, do far worse at 24% favorable
to 67% unfavorable. Voters trust Obama over Congressional Republicans to deal
with the major issues facing the country by 50% to 42%. Congressional Democrats
have a better-but-still-bad rating of 40% positive to 52% negative. They lead
the GOP on the generic ballot 47%-40%.
Respondents
support universal background checks 71%-22%. Democrats (85%), Republicans (57%)
and Independents (66%) all support universal background checks. Only 14% say
they’d be more likely to support their elected officials if they voted against
universal background checks; 51% say a “no” vote would make them less likely to
vote for the official. The National Rifle Association has a net-positive
approval rating of 43%-41%. Contradictorily, 40% of voters say they’d be less
likely to support an NRA-endorsed candidate to 28% who would be more likely to
vote for him or her.
“Six
months after Newtown voters are still angry about Congress’ lack of action on
background checks,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. “A
majority say they’ll hold elected officials who block legislation responsible
for it in the next election.”
Attorney
General Eric Holder has an overall negative favorability rating at 21%
favorable to 39% unfavorable. 41% of respondents say Holder should resign to
34% who want him to stay on the job. Voters want Republicans to move on from
their attempts to repeal Obamacare by a margin of 52%-45%.
Who
should win the Stanley Cup turns out to be a far more polarizing issue. Support
for the Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins breaks down along a margin of 23%
for the Blackhawks and 21% for the Bruins. The NBA finals inspire a more
unified response. By a margin of 32% to 20%, respondents hope the San Antonio
Spurs will beat the defending champions Miami Heat.
PPP surveyed 603 registered voters between June 11-13,
2013. The margin of error was +/- 4.0%. This poll was not authorized or paid
for by any campaign or political organization. PPP’s surveys are conducted
through automated telephone interviews.
