Texas Republicans Don’t See Presidential Qualities in Governor Perry

| Tom Jensen

Header-poll-resultsThough Governor Rick Perry receives high marks from Texas Republicans, they don’t see Presidential prospects for the Governor. 58% of Republicans approve of Perry, but only 14% think he should run for President.

When thrown in a horse race against popular national Republicans he does little to sway the outcome. Only 8% of likely primary voters chose Perry over others. With (and without) the Governor in the race Newt Gingrich leads the pack with 23% (25% ), followed by Huckabee with 18% (22%), Ron Paul falls in last with 8% (10%) of the vote.

Typically voters side with who they know this far out from an election, even if they don’t think the person they know best is Presidential material, like we saw in Louisiana. It is surprising that Republicans in Texas don’t support Rick Perry against other leading Republicans.

Gingrich does well in Pennsylvania as well with 23% of likely primary voters’ support, but not as well as Sarah Palin, who rises to the top in the Keystone state with 24%. Huckabee follows Gingrich rallying 20% of Republicans, Romney earns 16%. Like Texas, Ron Paul once again finds little support in Pennsylvania with only 11% of the vote.

“We still are very far away from the primary election. However it is interesting that Texas Republicans prefer leading national Republicans over their own Governor,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling, “especially when they chose Governor Perry over Senator Hutchinson, who many considered a Washington insider”

PPP surveyed 500 Texas voters from June 19th– 20th.  The survey’s margin of error is +/- 4.38%.  Other factors, such as refusal to be interviewed and weighting, may introduce additional error that is more difficult to quantify.
