Support for drilling off the shore of North Carolina remains steady, with 48% supporting it to 38% in opposition. This clearly is a partisan issue— Republicans overwhelmingly support off shore drilling, 65 to 24 percent, in comparison to Democrats who oppose drilling 49:34.
The on going oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has had the largest impact on liberals, moderates and women’s opinion on drilling. Liberals are now 75% less likely to support drilling, moderates 57% and women 59%. However, conservatives are only 35% less likely and 33 percent more likely to support drilling.
The strongest support for off shore drilling in North Carolina can be found in the coastal regions of the state. Drilling has support in Southeastern North Carolina 56:39 and Northeastern North Carolina 45:35. Despite the oil spill, in comparison to any other region, more voters in the coastal plains are now more likely to support drilling.
“It will be interesting to see if the opinions of Costal Carolinians will shift as the oil spill becomes more severe and possibly moves up the Eastern Seaboard.” Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling said. “But for now folks in those regions remain very supportive of drilling.”
Governor Bev Perdue’s approval ratings are once again inching upwards, rising from 29 to 31 percent favorability.
US Congressional races look like they will be close in North Carolina. In a hypothetical ideological poll Democrats and Republicans came out in a dead tie.
Voters across the state are pleased to be breathing easy with the new smoking ban. The new law is extremely popular with the support of 68 percent of voters.
PPP surveyed 603 North Carolinian voters from June 4th– 7th. The survey’s margin of error is +/-4.0%. Other factors, such as refusal to be interviewed and weighting, may introduce additional error that is more difficult to quantify.
