Raleigh, N.C. – Only 19% of North
Carolinians support U.S. military action in Syria, including just over a
quarter of 2012 Obama supporters and a quarter of Democrats. 62% of the state
opposes U.S. intervention. People who identify as very liberal support
President Barack Obama’s push for action most. Despite the strong opposition, Obama’s
job approval rating of 48-49 is up slightly from 46-51 in August.
More than half of respondents support deploying all 535 members of Congress
to Syria as ground troops in the action, including 62% of Independents, the
highest of any party. 18 to 29 year olds have the most support for military
action, but are least supportive of sending Congress to Syria.
Senator Kay Hagan’s support of military action in Syria isn’t causing any
damage to her approval rating yet. 43% approve of her job performance and 39%
disapprove, compared to 42-41 last month. She easily leads every match-up with
potential Republican Senate opponents.
The 2014 Republican Senate nominee is still undecided, especially since
Virginia Foxx – last month’s GOP favorite – is out of the running. Phil Berger
leads the way among Republican primary voters with 13%, followed by 12%
choosing Thom Tillis, and 11% picking Jim Cain. Yet 43% said they weren’t sure
or wanted someone else for the nominee. Tillis had the highest favorability
rating of the potential candidates with 18%, but 56% of respondents weren’t
sure about him.
“With Virginia Foxx out of the mix the Republican Senate field is even more
up in the air than it was a month ago,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public
Policy Polling. “Most GOP voters want an option other than Thom Tillis but
there’s little agreement about who they want that alternative candidate to be.”
PPP surveyed 600 North Carolina voters,
including an oversample of 311 usual Republican primary voters, between
September 6-9, 2013. The margin of error for the overall survey is +/- 4.0%,
and +/- 5.6% for the GOP portion. This poll was not authorized or paid for by
any campaign or political organization. PPP’s surveys are conducted through
automated telephone interviews.
PPP will have more
North Carolina numbers looking at Pat McCrory’s standing and other things
related to state government tomorrow.
