Raleigh, N.C. –
Democratic
Governor Maggie Hassan led possible Republican challengers by double digits on
our poll this weekend. Her approval rating, 51-33, hasn’t changed much since we
polled in April: +19 then, +18 now. 84% of Democrats, 17% of Republicans and
50% of Independents say they approve of the job she’s done.

Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen leads in hypothetical match-ups as well.
Against Charlie Bass, Scott Brown, Dan Innis, Jim Rubens, Bob Smith, and Karen
Testerman, she led by margins of four to 22 points each. The closest opponent is
Scott Brown with 44% to her 48%. Shaheen’s approval rating was 49-42.

Republican Senator Kelly Ayotte has a 41-45 approval rating. Ayotte and
Hassan are basically tied in a match-up for the 2016 Senate election with 45%
and 44% respectively.

78% of respondents support requiring background checks on individuals buying
guns at gun shows, including 85% of women as well as 93% of Democrats, 66% of
Republicans, and 74% of Independents. 46% of voters say Ayotte’s vote against
background checks for guns makes them less likely to vote for her.

More than half of voters support the state’s legalization of same-sex marriage,
including 25% of Republicans and 57% of Independents. 61% said gay marriage
hasn’t had any impact on their life, including two-thirds of Republican and
Independent voters. 22% said its impact has been positive, while 17% said
negative.

On the hypothetical legislative ballot, Democrats have 44% and Republicans 43%.
President Barack Obama’s approval rating was 46-50, down from 52-46 in April.

“Maggie Hassan and Jeanne Shaheen look like favorites for reelection,” said
Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. “The fact that the strongest
possible candidate for New Hampshire Republicans lives in Massachusetts doesn’t
speak well for the party bench there.”

PPP surveyed 1,038 New
Hampshire voters between September 13-16, 2013. The margin of error for the
survey is +/- 3.0%. This poll was not authorized or paid for by any campaign or
political organization. PPP’s surveys are conducted through automated telephone
interviews.
