A new Public Policy Polling survey of California voters finds pretty wide open races both for Governor and a potential Senate vacancy. Key findings from the survey include:
-Gavin Newsom leads the way for Governor, but with just 25%. He’s followed by Kevin Faulconer with 20%, Eric Garcetti with 13%, Ashley Swearengin with 12%, Antonio Villaraigosa with 9%, Tom Steyer with 4%, Alex Padilla with 3%, and John Chiang with 2%.
Newsom leads the way among Democrats with 38% to 15% for Garcetti and 13% for Villaraigosa. Faulconer leads the way among Republicans with 45% to 22% for Swearengin.
-It’s still unknown if Dianne Feinstein will run for reelection to the US Senate but if she chooses to retire the race to replace her would be up for grabs. In a hypothetical field of candidates we found Xavier Becerra with 21%, Kevin Faulconer with 18%, Ashley Swearengin with 13%, and Brad Sherman with 11%. Eric Swalwell at 5% and Kevin de Leon at 4% finish further back.
Faulconer at 36% and Swearengin at 26% poll in double digits among Republicans, while Becerra at 30% and Sherman at 14% are the only candidates to hit double digits among Democrats.
-Donald Trump continues to be an extremely unpopular figure in California. Only 33% of voters in the state approve of how he has handled his transition, to 59% who disapprove. Democrats (87%) are far more unified in their disapproval of him than Republicans (76%) are in their approval, and independents split against him 33/55 as well.
Public Policy Polling interviewed 882 California voters on January 17th and 18th. The survey’s margin of error is +/-3.3%. This research was conducted on behalf of Jeffrey Haines.
