Bennet Takes Narrow Lead Over Norton

| Tom Jensen

Header-poll-resultsRaleigh, N.C. – After tying at 43% the last time PPP polled Colorado, Michael Bennet now inches ahead of Jane Norton in his re-election bid.  Meanwhile, Democratic challenger Andrew Romanoff has receded against Norton and the other Republicans.

Bennet is up 44-41 on Norton and 45-39 on Republican contender Ken Buck, the latter essentially unchanged from March’s 46-40.  Against Norton, Bennet has improved to 42-40 with independents, from 35-44.  But against Buck, Bennet is at 39-40, from 41-37.

Romanoff has bumped his favorability rating from 28-26 to 31-26 in two months by going from 20-30 among independents to 32-26, but he has lost ground to both Norton and Buck.  He is up on Norton only 43-41 after leading 44-39 in March.  10% fewer independents are undecided, with 5% going to each candidate.  Buck is down just 41-38 after losing 44-36 in the last poll.  In that matchup, Romanoff is now down 34-36 with independents (35-32 in March), and he now pulls only 6% of Republicans (versus 10%).

Bennet’s job approval is up slightly to 34-44, versus 32-46 in March.  He is still weak with his own party, at 54-20 (57-20 in the last poll), but he has picked up eight points with both Republicans, from 9-73 to 13-69, and independents, from 25-48 to 32-47.

Norton’s favorability has declined a little, from 25-35 to 20-32.  She has dropped from a 42% positive mark with the GOP to 34%, and many more now have no opinion on her.

“The political climate is starting to look better for Democrats and Michael Bennet’s improved standing is a clear example of that,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling.  “Jane Norton, at least so far, is not looking like a particularly strong opponent.”

PPP will release new numbers for Governor tomorrow.

PPP surveyed 1,060 Colorado voters from May 14th to 16th.  The margin of error for the survey is +/-3.0%.  Other factors, such as refusal to be interviewed and weighting, may introduce additional error that is more difficult to quantify.
