PPP’s newest Maryland poll finds Angela Alsobrooks leading the US Senate race with 45% to 34% for Larry Hogan with minor candidates getting 5%. There hasn’t been much change in the race since shortly before the primary when PPP found Alsobrooks ahead 46-37.
Much has been made of Hogan’s popularity in the state, but Alsobrooks actually has a net favorability rating 10 points better than his. She comes in at +27 (43/16) compared to his +17 (50/33). Hogan has a base issue with 26% of Republicans viewing him negatively compared to only 8% of Democrats who see Alsobrooks in a bad light. That dynamic helps explain why Libertarian Mike Scott is getting 3%.
Hogan is getting 15% of Democrats right now. Recent history suggests that Senate candidates in states that strongly favor the other party see their level of crossover support get smaller and smaller as the election nears, which doesn’t bode well for Hogan to close his already double digit gap.
Joe Biden leads Donald Trump by 26 points in the state, 56-30.
PPP surveyed 635 Maryland voters on June 19th and 20th. The margin of error is +/-3.9%. Full results here
