Raleigh, N.C. –
PPP’s newest Louisiana poll shows yet another state in which the race for the 2016 GOP Presidential nomination is wide open. Five different potential candidates garner at least 10% support from Republican primary voters, while none hit 20%.

Ted Cruz leads the way with 19%. Jeb Bush and Mike Huckabee follow closely behind with 17% each. Bobby Jindal (12%) and Rand Paul (10%) also get double-digit support, followed by Chris Christie with 6%. Marco Rubio and Paul Ryan receive 4% each. Jeb Bush leads among those self-described as moderate (22%) and somewhat conservative (20%), while Ted Cruz leads among the very conservative with 24%.

The top 6 Republican candidates are all neck-and-neck with Hillary Clinton in potential general election races. Bush and Huckabee both lead Clinton by 1 point at 46/45. Paul and Clinton are tied at 46% a piece, and Clinton leads Christie 46/42, Cruz 46/45, and Jindal 48/44.

Jindal’s poor performance against Clinton comes as no surprise given Louisiana voters’ negative view of him. 56% disapprove of his job performance, where as only 32% approve. A full 72% think that he should not run for President, including 63% of Republicans.

“Bobby Jindal continues to have the worst poll numbers of just about any elected official in the country,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. “If he gets into the Presidential race he’ll be doing it with very little support from his home state.”

Louisiana voters are pretty negative on Common Core and same-sex marriage. 48% of voters oppose Common Core, including 52% of independents. 55% think that same-sex marriage should not be allowed in the state. However, 62% think that gay couples should have some type of legal recognition, with 28% thinking they should be allowed to legally marry and 34% thinking they should be allowed to form civil unions.

PPP surveyed 664 registered voters, including 308 Republican primary voters, from June 26th to 29th. The margin of error for the overall survey is +/- 3.8%, and +/- 5.6 for the Republican portion. 80% of interviews for the poll were conducted over the phone with 20% interviewed over the internet to reach respondents who don’t have landline telephones.
