Raleigh
, N.C. – Hillary
Clinton remains neck and neck with many hypothetical GOP nominees in Louisiana. In a
match-up, Clinton beat Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, and polled within a
point of Jeb Bush, Chris Christie, and Rand Paul. Clinton vs. Paul Ryan was 44-46 respectively.

Louisianans don’t want their own governor on the presidential ballot. His
approval rating this weekend was 28-59. 72% said Jindal shouldn’t run for
president, up from 66% in February. Among likely Republican primary voters, Rand
Paul was the favorite on a list of possible GOP presidential candidates with
18%. Jeb Bush was next with 17%.

“Bobby Jindal is now the most unpopular Republican Governor in the country,”
said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. “Voters aren’t responding
well to the amount of time he’s spent focused on efforts outside Louisiana.”

63% of respondents do not support legalizing same-sex marriage, but 56%
support some sort of legal recognition – marriage or civil unions. 75% said
they support background checks for gun sales, up from 71% in May, which still
includes majorities of all parties.

The New Orleans Saints had higher approval than Louisiana State
University’s head
football coach Les Miles – 40-20 favorability – and former coach Nick Saban –
37-29 favorability. The Saints’ quarterback Drew Brees had an 81-6
favorability, down from 86% in February. Coach Sean Payton had a 65-8 approval
rating.

81% of the state likes Mother Theresa. That’s slightly higher than Abraham
Lincoln’s 78%. Jesus tops the list with 97% favorability. Republicans had a
higher favorability for Mother Theresa than Democrats or Independents did.

President Barack Obama’s approval rating was 41-52. 26% of Democrats
disapprove. Among whites, his approval was 21-72. Respondents were evenly split
on who was most responsible for the poor Hurricane Katrina response: George W.
Bush or Obama, 28-29.

PPP surveyed 721 Louisiana voters, including an oversample of
274 usual Republican primary voters, between August 16-19, 2013. The margin of
error for the overall survey was +/- 3.7% and +/- 5.9% for the GOP portion. This
poll was not authorized or paid for by any campaign or political organization.
PPP’s surveys are conducted through automated telephone interviews.
