McAuliffe leads Cuccinelli by 5 points

PPP’s new poll of the
Virginia gubernatorial race finds Terry McAuliffe leading Ken Cuccinelli
42%-37%. McAuliffe’s favorability rating is 29% favorable to 33% unfavorable.
Cuccinelli’s favorability is solidly negative, with 32% holding positive views
and 44% negative. Neither candidate is uniformly popular in his own party. McAuliffe
elicits negative or neutral opinions from 43% of Democrats, and 44% of
Republicans dislike Cuccinelli or aren’t sure.

“The
Governor’s race is shaping up exactly as expected- voters don’t care for either
Ken Cuccinelli or Terry McAuliffe,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public
Policy Polling. “But at this point they have a bigger problem with Cuccinelli
than they do with McAuliffe.”

Democrat
Aneesh Chopra would beat Republican E.W. Jackson in the lieutenant
gubernatorial race 36%-29%. The other Democratic primary candidate, Ralph
Northam, leads Jackson 35%-29%. Voters are ambivalent about the two Democrats.
Chopra’s ratings are split at 10% each. 7% of voters like Northam to 10% who
don’t. At 9% favorable to 20% unfavorable, Jackson’s ratings are negative.
Jackson is more popular with African-Americans than whites.

Republican
Mark Obenshain narrowly leads Democrat Justin Fairfax in the Attorney General’s
race, 32%-30%. Fairfax’s Democratic primary rival, Mark Herring, is up over
Obenshain 33%-32%. Obenshain’s favorability ratings are 12% favorable to 9%
unfavorable. Fairfax’s sit at 5% positive to 4% negative. Herring’s are evenly
divided at 7% positive and 7% negative.

Aneesh
Chopra holds the lead in the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor. He
leads Ralph Northam 27%-18%. The Attorney General primary results are within
the margin of error. Democrats support Mark Herring over Justin Fairfax by only
3%, at 22% for Herring to 19% for Fairfax.

PPP
surveyed 672 Virginia voters and 322 Democratic primary voters from May 24-26,
2013. The margin of error was +/- 3.8%. The margin of error for the Democratic
primary poll was +/-5.5%. This poll was not authorized or paid for by any
campaign or political organization. PPP’s surveys are conducted through
automated telephone interviews.
