Iowa has been one of the most frustrating states for Democrats in recent years but we have a new poll out this morning finding the Senate race is *tied* just two years after Trump won the state by 13 points.
Our nominee Josh Turek is a uniquely appealing candidate. He’s won multiple gold medals in the Paralympics and he’s in the National Wheelchair Basketball Hall of Fame.
He’s also already a proven vote getter. He got reelected to his State House seat by 5 points two years ago…at the same time Trump was winning his district by 9 points. He’s demonstrated the ability to post the strong margins with independents and win over some Republicans needed to win on hostile turf.
It also helps that Trump’s standing has declined precipitously in Iowa. 22% of his voters no longer support the job he’s doing and as a result his approval rating is down to 43% despite his history of big wins in the state. We could flip three House seats and the Governor’s office in Iowa this year in addition to the Senate race under these conditions.
Democrats need to win four seats for control of the Senate this fall and there are now six races- North Carolina, Maine, Alaska, Ohio, Texas, and Iowa- that look like really serious opportunities with the potential for that list to expand as the year goes along.
We’re doing a great job of putting forward strong candidates in these red states that have soured on Trump and that combination of factors is giving us a real path to a majority when that would have seemed unthinkable a year ago.
