Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison is still recovering from her failed run against Governor Rick Perry. Texas Republicans have mixed feelings about the Senator who challenged her own party’s Gubernatorial incumbent. 47% of Republicans approve of Hutchison, 37% disapprove and 18% remain unsure. She doesn’t find support outside her party either, as only 35% of Texans give Hutchison high marks.
Republican may think she is doing O.K. in Washington, but they don’t seem convinced that Hutchison should stay. When asked if the Senator should run for reelection 43% of Republicans said no, and 43% said yes. If she was to run for reelection 41% of voters in her own party said they would vote against her.
Some Republicans may endorse Hutchison’s support of the national Republican agenda. But they are angry at her for fracturing the Texas Republican party and consequently don’t want to see her continue her tenure as a representative of Texas or Republicans.
While Hutchison’s colleague Senator John Cornyn doesn’t fare much better across the state receiving only 40% approval, Republicans are far more enthused about Senator Cornyn. 66% of Republicans approve of Cornyn and a mere 11% disapprove.
“Hutchison lost the support of her base when she challenged someone within her own party and lost,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling, “It was a big gamble and now she has to make up for her big loss to salvage her political career.”
PPP surveyed 500 Texas voters from June 19th– 20th. The survey’s margin of error is +/- 4.4%. Other factors, such as refusal to be interviewed and weighting, may introduce additional error that is more difficult to quantify.
