Republicans in Illinois and Louisiana like Mike Huckabe, but Louisianans prefer their
favorite son, Governor Bobby Jindal.
Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney are the Republican favorites in Illinois. Both popular
Republicans take 25% of the Republican vote. Newt Gingrich is a close third, earning
23% of the vote. Sarah Palin falls behind with 18% and Ron Paul with 5%.
Louisiana Republicans overwhelming approve of Governor Jindal, 86:10. Less think he’s ready for the national stage; 48% said they think he should run for President in 2012.
But if he was on the ballot, filled with leading Republicans, he would win in a landslide.
Jindal earns 44% of the vote, in comparison to his closest competitors, Newt Gingrich
who earns 15%, and Huckabee, 14%.
Without Jindal in the horserace, Gingrich and Huckabee take the lead with 24% of
Republican support. Sarah Palin comes in a close third with 23% of the vote. Jindal
clearly has home court advantage.
Jindal finds his strongest supporters for his 2012 presidential bid amongst women. 49%
of woman threw their support behind their governor in a match up against the leading
Republicans.
“2012 is a long ways away,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling.
“Right now voters are siding with who they know; things may change as we near primary season and campaigns gear up and allegiances are formed.”
PPP surveyed 400 GOP primary voters in Louisiana and 400 GOP primary voters in
Illinois from June 12th- 13th. The margin of error for each survey is +/-4.9%. Other
factors, such as refusal to be interviewed and weighting, may introduce additional error
that is more difficult to quantify.
