Raleigh, N.C. –
PPP’s newest Minnesota poll finds that Senator Al Franken’s numbers remain strong entering his reelection campaign in 2014, while Governor Mark Dayton holds a ten point lead over potential Republican challengers who are struggling to gain traction.

Franken’s approval rating among registered voters in Minnesota is at 51/43; almost identical to his 51/42 approval rating from our last polls in May. The senator consistently leads would-be opponents Jim Abeler 50-39, Chris Dahlberg 49-39, Mike McFadden 49-38, Julianne Ortman 49-37 and Monti Moreno 49-36.

Mark Dayton’s numbers are also constant, and still strong, since our polling in May. The governor’s approval rating is currently 48/42, compared to 49/47 in the spring. Dayton sports a steady 10 or 11 point lead over Republican challengers Scott Honour 48-38, Jeff Johnson 48-37, Julie Rosen 48-36, Marty Seifert 48-37, Dave Thompson 48-37 and Kurt Zellers 48-38.

Republican challengers to Franken and Dayton seem to have serious name-recognition issues heading into 2014. When asked about the favorability of potential challengers to Franken, 77% to 83% of voters were unsure, and Dayton’s opponents are hovering between 66%-80% as basically unknown.

“Al Franken and Mark Dayton have positive approval numbers,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. “Combine that with their GOP opponents being largely unknown and it’s the recipe for double digit leads one year out from election day.”

57% of Twins fans in Minnesota support the retention of manager Ron Gardenhire, who just signed a two-year extension, even though the 2010 AL Manager of the Year has lost 90+ games every season since that award. In almost identical contrast, 56% of Minnesota Vikings fans want head coach Leslie Frazer fired after 2013.

PPP surveyed 895 Minnesota voters, including an oversample of 305 usual Republican primary voters, between October 27-29, 2013. The margin of error for the overall survey is +/- 3.3%, and +/- 5.7% for the GOP portion. PPP’s surveys are conducted through automated telephone interviews.
