Raleigh, N.C. – In head-to-head
match-ups for president, Hillary Clinton trails Republicans Jeb Bush, Chris
Christie, Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, and Paul Ryan by margins of three to 14 points.
She comes closest to Cruz, who is leading the campaign to shut down the
government unless President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act is defunded. Among
women, Clinton beat Cruz 45-37.
West Virginians are divided about the shutdown. 40% support it and 37%
oppose it. Nearly half of respondents support impeaching Obama, including 38%
of Democrats. Democratic leaders fared a bit better. Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin has
47% approval, Sen. Jay Rockefeller has 45%, and Sen. Joe Manchin has 46%, but
they have disapproval numbers of 35%, 46%, and 44% respectively.
“The fact that only 40% of voters in West Virginia favor a government
shutdown over Obamacare even though voters in the state want to impeach Obama
says something about how much support there is for that concept,” said Dean
Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. “It just doesn’t have that much
traction with the public.”
67% support requiring background checks for all gun sales, including 79% of
women. A third of respondents say they were more likely to vote for Manchin
because he supported background checks, while 29% said this made them less
likely to support him.
49% of voters support either same-sex marriage or civil unions, while 48%
don’t support any legal recognition. 68% said discrimination in employment and
housing based on sexual orientation or gender identity should not be allowed.
16% said it should.
West Virginians prefer the Hatfields to the McCoys, 21% and 9% respectively,
but 70% were not sure. 25% of respondents have a favorable opinion of
Massachusetts, with higher support among Democrats and 18-29-year-old voters,
while 23% said unfavorable and 52% were not sure. Dana Holgorsen has 18%
favorability, Rich Rodriguez has 11% favorability, and Bob Huggins has 45%
favorability.
PPP surveyed 1,110 West
Virginia voters between September 19-22, 2013. The margin of error for the survey
is +/- 2.9%. This poll was not authorized or paid for by any campaign or
political organization. PPP’s surveys are conducted through automated telephone
interviews.
