Charlotte Glad, Milwaukee Sad About Canceled Conventions

Voters in Charlotte are glad that the Republican convention got canceled, don’t want Donald Trump coming back to town, and don’t want to host the 2024 GOP convention to make up for missing out on this year. Voters in Milwaukee are sad that the Democratic convention got canceled, wish Joe Biden could have given his acceptance speech there, and overwhelmingly do want another shot at hosting the Democrats in 2024.

Only 27% of voters in Charlotte wish Donald Trump had been able to give his convention speech there, to 55% who are glad that he has to give it from Washington DC. By contrast 58% of voters in Milwaukee wish Joe Biden had been able to give his convention speech there, to just 22% glad he had to give it from Delaware.

58% of voters in Charlotte are glad that most of the convention had to be canceled, to only 32% who wish it was held as planned. Only 35% want another shot at hosting the Republican convention in 2024, with 48% saying they don’t want to. 68% of Charlotte voters would like Trump to not return to their city before the election, to only 24% who hope he comes to campaign there again.

By contrast only 30% of voters in Milwaukee are glad that most of the convention had to be canceled, with 53% wishing it could have been held as planned. 80% want another shot at hosting the Democratic convention in 2024, with just 12% saying they don’t want to.

Joe Biden leads Donald Trump 78-16 in Milwaukee and 70-26 in Charlotte. In the North Carolina Governor’s race Roy Cooper has a 69-25 lead over Dan Forest in the city of Charlotte.

As long as we were polling Charlotte we took a look at the popularity of each Mayor who has served a full term in the city this century. The most popular one is the current occupant of the office, Vi Lyles, with a net +26 favorability rating. Anthony Foxx is next at +16, followed by Jennifer Roberts at +5. Former longtime Mayor Pat McCrory, once a very popular figure in the city, is now a pariah with only 30% of voters seeing him favorably to 43% with a negative opinion.

Voters in Milwaukee have high opinions of their elected officials. Tony Evers has a 62/19 approval in the city. Gwen Moore is unusually popular for a member of Congress with 60% of voters approving and just 17% disapproving of her. Mayor Tom Barrett comes in at 53/26 and although most voters haven’t formed an opinion about new County Executive David Crowley yet he’s doing well with those who have- 42% approve and 13% disapprove.
