Changing Landscape Could Put Alaska On The Map

| pppadmin

Public Policy Polling’s newest Alaska survey finds that Dan Sullivan is not very popular, with just 38% of voters approving of him to 47% who disapprove.

Sullivan has basically no cross over popularity with Harris voters (3% approve, 91% disapprove) and his numbers are a little soft with the base as well with 65% of Trump voters approving of him and 13% disapproving.

Alaskans are known for having an independent streak and part of Sullivan’s problem is that he’s perceived to be overly loyal to the White House. Only 31% of voters characterize him as ‘an independent voice for Alaska,’ while 53% think he’s a ‘partisan voice for Donald Trump.’

He’s also having the same problem some other Republican Senators are where Democrats think he votes with Trump too much but some Republicans think he doesn’t vote with Trump often enough.

Overall, just 23% of Alaskans think Sullivan is striking the right balance when it comes to Trump loyalty while 49% think he’s voted with Trump too often and 17% (including 30% of Trump voters) think he hasn’t supported Trump sufficiently. In Alaska’s top 4 primary system that leaves room for someone to Sullivan’s right to find a lane to the general election.

One particular problem the Trump administration’s policies may be causing Sullivan is the impact of Canadian tariffs on costs for neighboring Alaskans. 58% of voters think they will cause costs to go up, including 27% of Republicans.

Democrats have recently won two special elections in places where Trump won by more than his 13-point margin of victory in Alaska last year and the 16-22 point over performances Democratic House candidates in Florida posted last week exceed the Republican edge in Alaska as well. In this political climate Dan Sullivan could face a tough challenge for reelection next year.

Public Policy Polling surveyed 552 Alaska voters on March 31st and April 1st, 2025 on behalf of Senate Majority PAC. The margin of error is +/- 4.2%. 71% of the interviews for the survey were conducted by text message and 29% by telephone. Full results here
