Raleigh,
N.C. – PPP’s latest
national survey finds President Barack Obama enjoying a strong advantage over
Congressional Republicans. 48% of voters approve of the job he’s doing to 49%
who disapprove with 3% who are not sure. Just 25% approve of Congressional
Republicans. 68% disapprove of them, and 7% are not sure. 38% like Congressional
Democrats; 56% don’t, and 12% aren’t sure.
73% of
Americans still support universal background checks to 21% who oppose. Just 26%
are more likely to support a politician who opposed background checks, and 42%
would be less likely to support the candidate. 40% would be less likely to vote
for a candidate supported by the NRA to 29% who say an NRA endorsement would
strengthen their support.
“Voters
nationally continue to strongly support background checks,” said Dean Debnam,
President of Public Policy Polling. “This is an issue where the public really
wants to see Congress act.”
33% of
voters have a favorable opinion of the Supreme Court. 42% have an unfavorable
opinion, and 25% aren’t sure. 36% think the court is too liberal; 30% see them
as too conservative, 5% aren’t sure and just 29% think the Court is “about
right.”
Antonin
Scalia gets a 27% favorability rating to 31% who don’t like him and 42% who
aren’t sure. Clarence Thomas is seen favorably by 31% of respondents,
unfavorably by 37% and neutrally 32%. Anthony Kennedy has a 25% favorability
rating; 16% of voters hold an unfavorable opinion of him, and 58% are not sure.
Samuel Alito is liked by 23% of voters, disliked by 24% and seen neutrally by
53%. Stephen Breyer gets positive favorability ratings from 19% of voters,
negative ratings from 16% and no opinion from 65%. 28% view Elena Kagan
positively to 27% who are negatively disposed and 46% who don’t know. 41% have
a favorable opinion of Sonia Sotomayor to 33% unfavorable; 26% have no opinion.
20% view John Roberts positively, 28% negatively and 52% neutrally.
PPP surveyed 1,099 registered voters between May 6-9,
2013. The margin of error is +/-3.0%. This poll was not paid for or authorized
by any campaign of political organization. PPP surveys are conducted through
automated telephone interviews.
