Newt Gingrich's campaign is rapidly imploding, and Ron Paul has now taken the lead in Iowa. He's at 23% to 20% for Mitt Romney, 14% for Gingrich, 10% each for Rick Santorum, Michele Bachmann, and Rick Perry, 4% for Jon Huntsman, and 2% for Gary Johnson.
Gingrich has now seen a big drop in his Iowa standing two weeks in a row. His share of the vote has gone from 27% to 22% to 14%. And there's been a large drop in his personal favorability numbers as well from +31 (62/31) to +12 (52/40) to now -1 (46/47). Negative ads over the last few weeks have really chipped away at Gingrich's image as being a strong conservative- now only 36% of voters believe that he has 'strong principles,' while 43% think he does not.
Paul's ascendancy is a sign that perhaps campaigns do matter at least a little, in a year where there has been a lot of discussion about whether they still do in Iowa. 22% of voters think he's run the best campaign in the state compared to only 8% for Gingrich and 5% for Romney. The only other candidate to hit double digits on that question is Bachmann at 19%. Paul also leads Romney 26-5 (with Gingrich at 13%) with the 22% of voters who say it's 'very important' that a candidate spends a lot of time in Iowa. Finally Paul leads Romney 29-19 among the 26% of likely voters who have seen one of the candidates in person.
Paul's base of support continues to rely on some unusual groups for a Republican contest. Among voters under 45 he's at 33% to 16% for Romney and 11% for Gingrich. He's really going to need that younger than normal electorate because with seniors Romney's blowing him out 31-15 with Gingrich coming in 2nd at 18%. Paul is also cleaning up 35-14 with the 24% of voters who identify as either Democrats or independents. Romney is actually ahead 22-19 with GOP voters. Young people and non-Republicans are an unusual coalition to hang your hat on in Iowa, and it will be interesting to see if Paul can actually pull it off.
Romney's vote share is up 4 points from a week ago to 20% from it previous 16% standing. His favorability numbers have improved a little bit as well from 48/44 to 49/40. One thing Romney really has going for him is more room for growth than Paul. Among voters who say they're not firmly committed to their current candidate choice, Romney is the second choice for 19% compared to 17% for Perry, 15% for Bachmann, and only 13% for Paul. It's particularly worth noting that among Gingrich- who seems more likely to keep falling than turn it around- voters, he's the second choice of 30% compared to only 11% for Paul.
In addition to having more support right now Paul also has firmer support (73% solidly committed) than Romney does (68% solidly committed.) But at the same time Romney appears to have more room for growth, which could allow him to overtake Paul in the last two weeks.
Two other notes on Romney: he's now winning the electability primary- 25% of voters think he would have the best chance to defeat Obama compared to 17% for Gingrich and 16% for Paul. And he also leads Paul 24-18 among voters who watched the Sioux City debate on Thursday night, confirming general perception that he had the stronger performance.
The rest of the field isn't getting much traction. Among the three candidates tied at 10%, Santorum has gained a couple points compared to last week, Perry has moved up a single point, and Bachmann is down a point. There is some indication that Iowans are warming up to Perry a little bit. He's gone from a -4 (43/47) favorability to a +8 (48/40).
With six candidates in double digits there are still a lot of different things that could happen the final two weeks in Iowa. But it looks like Paul and Romney have emerged as the clear front runners.

Hi. Would you consider polling South Carolina? Would be interesting to see if 1) Gingrich is melting in that state too 2) Paul is catching up and 3) if Romney has any chance at all in that state.
SC is the kind of state where Romney and Paul shouldn't do so well, so maybe if Gingrich still has a large lead he could survive losing Iowa? Yes, I know the odds are bad, and since I'm not supporting Gingrich I certainly hope it won't happen. Still interested in whether it COULD possible happen.

Can't stop the power of reason. Other candidates go up and down because they flip flop constantly. Ron Paul goes steadily up because he is honest and his policies are formed out of common sense; not to appeal to idiots. People's criticisms of Paul come down to childish insults "paulbots", and generalities due to the fact that they dont have enough knowledge to criticize any of his policies. All reason, history and common sense is on Paul's side, all the losers who oppose him have now is trying to distort or censor his message, and oh wow are they trying.

Our man Dr. Paul! This is the first time I've ever considered voting in an election ever. Not because I wasn't into politics, but because I couldn't morally vote for war and the stripping of our civil liberties by both parties. Believe me there are A LOT more people like me. :)

Ron Paul is a nice enough guy and has some good policies domestically, but he scares me in many ways as well. I'd rather go with someone who is more of a stabilizing influence and not so radical.

Insane past? Are you talking about the newsletters or the voting no for the civil rights act? Because there is nothing else i can think of. He combated the news letters last time he ran (you tube it). The leader of the NAACP stated that he doesn't believe he is a racist and Paul has touted MLK as a hero many times.
Liberals often tout the fact that he voted no for the civil rights act as more racism proof. The simple fact is that Paul voting with the constitution and standing up for personal property rights felt the act did not do enough to address the property rights issue. Ron Paul has proven many times that he stands up for civil liberties so the claims are false.
Ron Paul is the best choice to recover this nation from years of chronyism, 1% worship and flat out fleecing of the free people of this nation by it's leaders. Please research him fully before you stand with the blanketed 'hes a crazy racist old man' doctrine.

Just like in 2008, the poll numbers begin to more closely represent the actual numbers the closer you get to the election. They adjust to reality.
The internal polling showed Ron Paul way ahead over a month ago.

"Paul is also cleaning up 35-14 with the 24% of voters who identify as either Democrats or independents."
These are the people who will decide the general election.
Only Ron Paul can pull enough independents and dis-enfranchised democrats to beat Obama in the general. And it is the young republicans that are both the future of the party and the country. And they are tired of government waste and wars.

The Republican Party Establishment would be wise to embrace Ron Paul so as to be associated with leadership for real change rather than be left behind defending status quo positions.
When presented with the choice of never ending wars, bankruptcy, and full scale Depression or starting the process of recovery by attacking the deficit, Ron Paul’s message can only grow among voters.
There are already signs of support for Ron Paul coming from traditional Democratic voters who are close observers of the political scene. As Ron Paul’s views become more known to mainstream Democrats, particularly when it comes to the wars, one can see the great potential for his winning the general election. Polls show that Ron Paul already beats Obama when it comes to independent voters.
The Republicans can not afford anymore surprises. Ron Paul has no skeletons in his closet. His consistency to principles when it comes to voting record as well as personal life can only be admired. Bringing in and keeping the hearts and minds of the massive following that Ron Paul has among the younger generation should be very appealing when it comes to the future of the Republican Party.
The most important reason why the Republican Party Establishment should embrace Ron Paul is doing what’s best for the country. The trust and credibility that Ron Paul has earned will allow him to successfully explain the need for some patience and sacrifice to work our way out of the present economic crisis, which will be required of our next President. The actions that he proposes are absolutely needed to start the recovery process.

Oh great, the man with the tin foil hat, George McGovern-style approach to foreign policy that would spell our destruction is getting a lead. Do the people supporting him really understand his foreign policy stance? Or that he believes 9-11 was an inside job, an incredibly reprehensible position?
Paul himself says he doesn't think he has the stamina for the rest of the primary, so what are the odds he could make it through a Presidency, since that's a marathon as well?
Why are these Paul people celebrating? Oh that's right, their candidate could literally say and do anything and it wouldn't matter, just like the Obamabots. Hmm... Paulbots.
He'd be better to have in the office than O, but just marginally. I for one hope that soon RuPaul runs out of his juice like he believes he will. Like, before the primary.

Years of "freedom" rhetoric from "conservative" talk radio pundits like limbaugh, Hannity and levin,is nothing more than talk in my opinion. They really don't believe in it. Look who they support over Ron Paul; Newt Gingrich. Gingrich doesn't believe in freedom; he says he would ignore the courts as President if he disagrees with their rulings. That sounds like tyranny in the making to me.

Nonie: "This country will not elect no extreme libetarian to run this country."
And that is the saddest part of your statement. You are so far down the path, that you now abhor the constitution of the United States. The one that the president, the Congress, the military, the police and every local, state and federal employee swears to uphold and protect, and probably what many US citizens, legal and illegal residents claim to cherish, and you pay lip service to...but then call anyone that wants us to go back and stay faithful to the constitution, an extremist. So sad. Ron Paul is true, both to his own words and the constitution. Always has been, always will be.

If the government was not trying to pass bills with loopholes to censor the internet, and if the TSA did not alarm me, and if the PATRIOT Act was not being used for drug arrests, I might not have supported Ron Paul during this campaign. I have views that are liberal and conflict with Ron's ideas but I like some of his stances on civil liberties.
Posted by: Interesting | December 19, 2011 at 09:36 AM
I see the poll confirms Ron Paul is the preferred choice of young voters and Democrats, the same coalition of ignorance who handed us 4 years of Barack Obama's disastrous presidency.
It's absolutely stunning that Iowa voters are gullible and naive enough to believe from a few ads that Mitt Romney is more of a consistent conservative than Newt Gingrich. That's a laugh. Mitt has shifted around from the far left to the far right every time he runs in a new election. He has NO record of conservative achievements, NONE.
Newt has been a conservative for decades, helped advise Ronald Reagan for goodness sakes on how to be a conservative, and has racked up countless conservative achievements during his career in the House. No one besides Newt has done more for the conservative movement in the last 30 years except for Ronald Reagan.

Ron Paul is NOT an isolationist, he is a non-interventionist! Come on people do your research before continuing to spew garbage that you heard from the misinformed! And yes, his views may seem 'radical', but if you look at how far America has drifted apart from the Constitution, which was made to stand against time and was written by some of the smartest men in history, then you will realize that it is our current way of living that is radical. Dr. Ron Paul just wants to bring the Constitution that founded this country back into our government, and bring back power to the states. Even people in all different countries around the world want us to vote him as our president. Do any of you actually go off and research for your own or do you just listen to what the next person tells you, or what every mainstream media article tells you? That's how the term 'sheeple' came about. Please if you care at all about true liberty, especially now that the National Defense Authorization Act has passed, you will take another look at Ron Paul and conduct some research on your own.

Not only does Ron Paul lie about foreign policy (claiming that only a formal declaration of war authorizes military force, when Jefferson used the same authorization in Tripoli that Bush did in Iraq), but the Obama campaign will rip him a new one with all his ties to racist material. And Paul will get torn up in a real debate. No one is gonna vote for this stuttering, stammering fool who repeats the same lines over and over again. I hope to God he isn't the nominee or it's another 4 years of Obama.

Newt Gingrich just want to make millions like Mitt Romney from speeches and book sales. His campaign appearances have been primarily at debates, selling books, and at events to get media attention.
He is not spending much time in Iowa, New Hampshire, or spending long hours on the campaign trail meeting voters. Newt is all about ego and not about the interests of the American people.
If he became the nominee or (God forbid) President, Gingrich would have to work long hours and it would interfere with his feeding schedule. We haven't had a fat President since Taft. I am sure he gets winded from not much walking.

What's really pathetic in the whole GOP race is that Huntsman, the ONLY candidate who's not either nuts or loaded with baggage but is actually sane and sober, has such low polling numbers, and consistently so. This GOP field is, by and large a revolting freak show full of phonies and hypocrites. Let's face it: Paul is their "flavor of the week", but think about it, people...do you REALLY want that whack-job sitting in the oval office spewing his anti-government venom and threatening to shut down any department that displeases him (which would be pretty much ALL of them!) Paul's INSANE, don't you all see that, and his son Rand is heading down that same garden path to mental illness. What the GOP needs to do, and soon, is give their only truly sane and sober candidate, Jon Huntsman, some support 'cause he's the only one among them that's not full of crap.
Posted by: Michael Wisper | December 19, 2011 at 04:43 PM
Reality check, people: Iowa is an outlier. Always has been.
The Iowa caucuses have only selected the eventual Republican nominee 50% of the time; they have only selected the next President 17% of the time.
Iowa is actually in a three-way tie for worst track record of any of the fifty states (the other two are Massachusetts and Michigan).
Consider Paul's chances of actually following up on an Iowa win: Romney is the dead-on favorite in New Hampshire. South Carolina is the GOP's firewall against fringe candidates--and Paul is predictably getting no traction there.
So a victory for Ron Paul in Iowa is not likely to affect the race for the Republican nomination. If anything, it is likely to cement Iowa's status as the basket NOT to put all your eggs in. If Paul wins Iowa, we might even see a movement afoot to seriously shake up the Republican primary calendar and demote Iowa to a later date for 2016.

Fantastic. I'm a Democrat voting for Obama but I would love to see Ron Paul nominated on the Republican side. It would be breathtaking to see the two debate. Paul can still win me over if he does well in such a debate. I love his old fashioned integrity, lack of a desire to be an imperial president, yankee trader view of US foreign policy and much more. I have some problems with some of his domestic policy ideas but a good series of debates should determine for me whether my concerns are truly justified. I also love it that the young people are so energized by Paul. This is good for Democracy and good for our country. Go Ron Paul and good luck.

Ron Paul's extreme isolationist views and policies are a huge danger to our country - and would leave America subject to more attacks. Ron Paul stated that he would NOT have authorized the mission to kill Osama bin Laden in Pakistan. Ron Paul also condemned the killing of al Quada terrorist Al-Awlaki, who was instrumental to orchestrating attacks in the U.S. (Fort Hood, the underwear bomber, and more). Paul is completely off base when he says that hatred of Islam is used to justify American policies of intervention and occupation. American policy is based on stopping those who want to kill Americans. Simply put, Ron Paul will leave Americans at the mercy of anyone who wants to kill us. Let's hope the Ron Paul fanatics wake up to what a danger this guy is.

It's time we deal with our problems and let the rest of the world deal with their own. Stop ALL foreign aide until we are out of Debt. Cut Congress's salary by 50%, cap all government employees salary and make them pay into their pension and healthcare. Fire ALL Communists, Socialists and "Progressives" from government positions. These people seek the downfall of the Free market Capitalist system, not very smart to put them in charge of your Free market Capitalist system. Start holding investigations into corruption in government. I know it's there, I want it found and brought out of the darkness into the light so the People can see what these power hungry madmen in Washington have been up to behind closed doors. All the back room deals, the Democrats giving 10's of Millions in loans to "Green Energy" projects run by other Democrats, Fast and Furious Operation which lead to people being killed with Automatic Assault Weapons delivered to them by ERIC HOLDER and Obama. They should be in jail, not on vacaton. Obama just took a 4 million dollar Vacation, how's that for the 99%, If You Occupy Moron's Had Any Clue You'd Occupy The White House!!!

@hipsterkid - This 40 year old, employed, computer engineer has voted (R) his entire life. I will be voting for Dr. Paul and am anti-hipster. Trash your suppositions, open your eyes, and realize that Dr. Paul is the ONLY candidate that is not a member of the good ol' boys club. You'll be amazed what an open mind can do.

Well I don't understand why anyone is voting for any of the politicians since they said YES to the law that detains Americans So I should seeing every American voting for Ron Paul.. That law to detain Americans proved that all the politicians running for president is not for the people.. Only 7 politicians including Rand Paul voted against this bill So that goes to show you who is for the people and against.. RONPAUL2012

Illegal aliens for Ron Paul. Ron Paul revolution like on billboards on West Coast. The only defender of the consituttion. No more wars without decleration of. No more losing young lives, spending billions of taxpayers money, and paving the way for corporations to profit. We love you Ron, you are our hope.

If you want more war, more debt, more money printing and more bail outs, not to mention more shredding of the Constitution and Bill of Rights, go with the establishment "Republicans". Or stick with Obama.
If you are tired of all of the above, vote for the only candidate with a clear track record of not supporting the major corporatist nonsense, which is of course Ron Paul.

What other polls? the MSM has been trying to hide it and showing closed polls with 54 votes. All those who have been following it closely know where Paul has been all along. How many straw polls has he won? have you noticed that the MSM are not talking about the straw polls at all? Paul has won like 5 times more straw polls then anyone else. He has been doing this well despite so many not voting because they don't think he has a chance. Imagine what his numbers are going to do when people realize he has a clear chance to win! Ron Paul 2012!!

It is so very interesting to me that if a website or news source has the courage to report the truth and that truth happens to involve Ron Paul leading in polls some people automatically condemn the site or news source for being a Ron Paul "fan site" or make other outlandish claims or accusations. It is becoming very clear that Ron Paul actually can shake things up in government, he IS for the people (that includes the haters and doubters and internet trolls as well) and electing him will no doubt bring many much needed changes that we ALL can benefit from as a country, as a people.
I am tired of the same puppets holding office. They all share the same agenda and do not care about us, the people of this country. We the people who PAY them to screw us ! I am voting for Ron Paul.
Don't believe the haters. Ron Paul is our only hope for real change !

Ron Paul is the only true candidate for president out there. He is the only one who can bring us back to the Constitution. He is consistent. Like him or not, consistency is the best thing we can have in a President. Consistency = Honesty. Isn't it time for an honest President ? Vote for Ron Paul.

Ron Paul knows economics, freedom and liberty. The candidate with the most support from the military. He is moral and HONEST and tells it like it is, he dosen't just say what people want to hear. He will RESTORE America. I am a proud Ron Paul supporter and he is my ONLY choice for president.
Come on America, if you want the same old crap vote Obama or Romney or any of the other candidates who will promise you the world and continue doing what politicians have been doing for years, ruining our economy. If you want a candidate who will cut a Trillion dollars the first year, get rid of government waste and give people back their voice, Ron Paul is that person. Ron Paul 2012 !!!!!

I've noticed that those who support Ron Paul do not live in fear. This is his greatest asset. Fearful people always want war and to spend problems away. Neither are productive to our fundamental values. The people who live in fear live a brainwashed life, and sadly, some are ok with that. The massive egos, false wealth, and ignorance that accompany this constant subconscious fear are truly massive in this country. This is not freedom. It’s self-isolation.
